I’ve lived outside the U.S. for nearly a decade — not on a vacation, but long enough to deal with long-term visas, culture shock, language barriers, money issues, homesickness… and eventually, making it all feel like home.

Social media makes life abroad look like the opening scene of a James Bond film - sunsets, background music, and a flawless six-pack.

Sometimes you’ll get some of that. But most days it’s:

• Grocery shopping: Why does yogurt come in a bag and laundry detergent in a box? And why aren’t the milk and eggs refrigerated?

• The Paperwork Paradox: What do you mean I need a bank account to get an apartment, but I need an apartment to get a bank account?

• The Duolingo Betrayal: Chest held high, you confidently give a well practiced latte order — but the barista doesn’t respond like the cartoon owl promised. You end up leaving having paid too much for a hot cup of water.

• Bureaucracy Battles: The border officer wants an apostilled high school diploma and birth certificate before they’ll let you in. (Do I even still have those?)
